What is a Customer Avatar?

A customer avatar is a detailed description of an ideal (but fictional) customer or client. When you have a concrete representation of your ideal customer, it’s easier to choose appropriate marketing channels and create content that your perfect customer wants to see.

You must consider things like age, gender, preference for media channels, and even what types of services they require and why. With this level of detail not only do you know how to reach them but also what they want.

When creating an avatar it can be helpful to find someone within your target market who you could interview about who they are and what matters most in their business – this will help you better define the avatar.

Eventually, you can use your customer avatar to help develop and craft your dream 100.

What is a Customer Avatar Worksheet?

A customer avatar worksheet is a document that helps you create a concrete avatar using the information you have. This way it’s easier to pin down your target market and thus make marketing decisions and choose content that is most appropriate for them.

I chose to make my client avatar template in Google Sheets because it allows me to look at all the information I compile at once. If it were in a normal document, it would end up being several pages long.

How to Use My Free Customer Avatar Worksheet

Once you’ve copied it to your drive, I recommend creating a second copy of the template. This way you will always have a blank one you can make another copy of in the future.

If you prefer a video tutorial, I made on of those as well:

Rename one of the copies with the name of the business you’re creating an avatar for, and then start filling out the cells. Begin at the top of the left column and work your way down, then proceed to the next column and continue.

By the time you reach the end of the worksheet, you should have a well-rounded idea of your customer avatar. This should take at least 20-30 minutes but could take as much as several hours.

If you have a team to work with, it can be good to bounce ideas for the customer avatar off of them.

Once your first draft is finished, go back through each cell and ask yourself if what you wrote makes sense, and if it’s optimal. Try to think of an example of a real person who has each trait you’ve assigned to the avatar.

How to Create a Customer Avatar PDF

If you want a PDF version of the profile you create in Google Sheets, just go to File > Download > PDF document (.pdf).

This allows you to download a PDF version of the completed sheet to your computer. You can also download a blank template this way if you want to print it and fill it out by hand.

Simple Customer Avatar Example

Here’s a quick example of a customer avatar I put together for my digital marketing business, LoverFighterWriter.

Name: James Hudson

Age: 36

Gender: Male

Income: $70,000-$100,000 per year from affiliate marketing or eCommerce. Maybe a small business owner.

Channel Preference: Social media and website content. Email announcements for things like new blog posts. Prefers email notifications of important product updates rather than newsletters. Likely to follow on Facebook and Twitter.

Motivation: Is passionate about content marketing and wants to grow his brand’s online presence. Wants to achieve the best ROI for time spent on social media, email list building, etc.

As you can see this is a very general example of a customer avatar – it barely scratches the surface of what you can do with one. But for some businesses this is more than enough information to get started.

Is an Avatar the Same as a Persona?

A persona represents who your ideal customer is, while an ideal customer avatar represents all of the attributes (traits and behaviors) that make up your ideal customer. A well-defined avatar will include personality, specific behaviors, and values.

On the other hand, a well-defined persona will include whether your ideal customers are early adopters or late adopters, what their biggest challenges are, and information about how they work – not just their demographics.

Is There Such Thing as a Customer Avatar Generator?

There are a few tools which refer to themselves as customer avatar generators, but they are generally just interactive worksheets. If you want a tool which will generate a completely customized avatar for you, what you need is an AI copywriting software.

How to Make an Avatar Work for You

If you want to use an avatar in your business, it’s important to understand how it works. The first thing you need to do is define your ideal customer. You can do this in a variety of ways:

  • By looking at the demographics of the people who are already buying from you.
  • By looking at the demographics of your customer list.
  • By listening to what your customers are saying on social media.

Whatever method you choose, make sure that you know as much about your ideal customer as possible. Once you do this, you’ll have a much easier time creating the avatar that’s right for you.

Conclusion: Finding Your Ideal Customer Avatar

Understanding your customers is the first step to creating a customer avatar that will help you do more of what’s working and less of what isn’t. Your customer avatar should include their personality, specific behaviors, values – not just demographics.

After defining who your ideal customer is, it’s time to create an avatar sheet which includes all the information about them including how they use the internet.

The last thing you’ll need to do before using this tool in your business is make sure that you know as much about them as possible so you can successfully implement the knowledge in your marketing and sales systems.
